Spicy tofu
If you are not a vegetarian, chances you probably haven not cooked much with tofu. It is a great snack and you can now buy them flavoured to avoid the bland flavour of plain tofu. This recipe will turn any tofu into a tasty treat!
Serves 2
Ingredients
- 1 slab of firm tofu, cubed
- 1 jalapeno chilli (or other chilli, if you prefer)
- 2 garlic cloves
- 1 tablespoon of date syrup (or maple syrup or honey)
- 1 tablespoon of rapeseed oil (we used Fussels smoked rapeseed oil)
- 1 tablespoon of soy or tamari sauce
- 1 teaspoon of miso paste
- 1/2 teaspoon of cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
- 1 tablespoon od black (or white) sesame seeds
- Selection of bitter leaves such as chicory or radicchio
- For the dressing:
- Small bunch of chives
- 200ml plain oil (such as rapeseed)
- Large pinch of salt
Method
For the dressing: Blend the chives, salt and oil together and put to one side
Using a pestle and mortar, smash the chilli and garlic together, using a pinch of salt to help it along
You can also just chop both very finely together
Add the spices, ate syrup and miso and continue to combine
Add the tamari, oil and sesame seeds and combine with the cubed tofu and leave to marinate for at least an hour at room temperature
Fry at high heat until crispy (5-8 minutes)
Serve on top of the dressed leaves
